So you want to know how to become a better singer at home but don’t know where to start. The truth is, there are many different ways to improve your singing voice whether you were born with the talent or not.
I’ve spent the last several years working in the music industry as a songwriter for a variety of big and small artists from all over the world. Whether they were singing at karaoke night or performing in front of thousands of people, I’ve seen the following strategies and techniques, improve the vocal abilities of the best and worst singers. Follow this guide and you will definitely become a better singer!
Learn Your Voice and What Your Vocal Range Is
You can only learn how to become a better singer by first learning about your own voice. What is your vocal range? What key do you sound best in? What volume of singing is most comfortable?
These are all very important to learn because if you don’t, not only will you not be able to improve your singing, but you might actually damage your voice trying. There are many ways to find answers to these questions:
Online Singing Courses
This is a quick way to get all the answers you need about your voice. Even the best and biggest singers in the world use vocal coaches or singing lessons to help them understand and perfect their singing voices. Online singing courses are the best support if you don’t want to have a personal vocal coach.
For those who don’t want to pay the cost of having a vocal coach, free apps are another way to go to learn about your voice. Some of the best include SingTrue, Vocal Coach, Sing Sharp, Singing Lessons, and Easy Ear Training.
Youtube is a wonderful place to learn how to do just about anything. There are hundreds of videos with step-by-step guides on how to find your vocal range and understand your personal singing voice. Here are a few links to start:

Learn How to Use It and Keep it Healthy
Once you understand your voice, the next step is learning how to use it and maintain it. As you continue on your journey of learning how to become a better singer, you will find a lot of information online about techniques and best practices. Do not overlook these as they are very important and truly make a difference. Some of the most important things to pay attention to are as follows:
Have you ever seen a recording studio or gone to a concert where the singer lays down while singing into the microphone? No! That’s because proper posture is very important when singing. Everything from the alignment of your diaphragm to the position of your feet and knees, to the angle of your chin, is important for improving your vocals.
Learn the 5 Elements of Singing Posture:
Ask any great singer you know and they will stress the importance of learning to breathe properly when you sing. Not only knowing how to breathe but where to breathe from. You need to learn how it feels to breathe correctly for singing so that you can master it and drastically improve your vocal skills.

People of all shapes and sizes can be and become amazing singers. However, there is plenty to be said about how certain foods and beverages can have an impact on your ability to sing. Many of the artists I have worked with over the years have learned to be very particular about what they eat and drink in the hours before they plan to sing. For example, despite what many think, having a hot cup of tea before singing can actually dry out your vocals due to the caffeine.
These Are the Best and Worst Drinks for Singers:
Practice and Trust the Process
Stating the obvious here, every talent requires practice. The more you practice the better you will get. Make a point to spend a set amount of time each day using your apps, standing in your best singing posture, and breathing correctly. Most importantly, actually practice singing!
Practicing can be frustrating when you don’t trust the process. If you really want to know how to become a better singer, the secret is knowing that nothing happens overnight. Practicing daily for one week and expecting to go from a bad American Idol tryout to Whitney Houston, is like trying to watch grass grow! Just know that if you are committed and working towards your goal every day, you are getting better and you will be a great singer!!
Sing in Front of People
Lastly, and honestly my personal favorite, sing for people. If you’re up for it, go to an open mic night, or do some karaoke. Sing in front of your family and friends who support you, get feedback. A lot of times we are our own biggest critics and therefore will not be able to see that we are improving on our own. By allowing others to be a part of your singing journey, you will be surprised and motivated as you get feedback telling you that you are getting better and better with time.
Believe You Can
What you think you can do, impacts what you actually can do. If you keep telling yourself you cannot sing, or that you cannot get better, then that will be your truth. Instead, practice daily positive affirmations.
“I am capable of learning to sing”
“I will improve my singing voice”
“I am a good singer and I will continue to get better”
Being in the right mindset about singing is more important than most people know. It is your foundation. If you do not have the belief that is it possible then all of the other techniques and strategies will be a waste of your time. I have seen some of the most incredible vocal transformations come from those who simply wanted to become better singers, and believed they could!
No matter what you do, never forget the most important thing, that is to believe in yourself and never give up on your dream to become a better singer!!!
