6 Easy Ways To Turn On Bose Soundbar Without Remote, Step by Step Instructions Provided

Losing your remote, or not having one at all, can be frustrating and leave you feeling helpless when it comes to using your Bose soundbar.

But don’t worry, there are still ways to turn it on without a remote, and we’re here to help you do it.

Whether you’re trying to set up your soundbar for the first time or you’ve just misplaced your remote, this article will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to get your soundbar up and running.

6 Ways To Turn On Your Bose Soundbar Without Its Remote

#1 Use Your Mobile Device As A Remote

Use Your Mobile Device As A Remote

The first option is to use your own mobile device as a remote. Not every phone has this, but many do in the modern era, whether Apple or Android.

There is a tiny hole in your phone for sending an infrared signal. If a device has the ability to send out IR, your Bose Soundbar may work with it.

Normally, phones don’t have the ability to submit remote control signals, but, as the saying goes: “There’s an app for that!”

In this case, you’ll want the Control Space Remote Custom app. It’s available on Apple and Android, though this link goes to Google Play.

As an app made by Bose, it has a ton of features and pairs well with the Bose Soundbar.

It may take some time as the interface is a little tricky, though they’ve done some major user-interface updates recently.

#2 Bose Music App Connections

The easier option, especially if your phone doesn’t have IR capability, is to download the Bose Music App.

It’ll connect automatically through Wifi as long as they’re both on the same network.

Note: Turn your Bose on without a remote by unplugging and replugging the soundbar in with the power cable.

Once connected, you’ll have access to settings, source selection, and some auto features we’ll describe in the next steps.

#3 Use An Auto-Wake Feature

If you don’t want to mess with your soundbar and only need it to turn on and follow the volume of the TV, you don’t need much. Here is where the Auto-Wake feature comes in handy.

Using your Bose Music App from the last method, navigate to settings and enable the Auto-Wake. It’ll have you select a source or criteria, so make sure you set it with your TV as the proper source.

Once you’ve done this, it’ll automatically turn on and off with the TV when it goes on. It’ll also follow the TV’s volume settings automatically.

Just make sure you went to the TV’s advanced audio settings and selected the right channel for how the soundbar is connected. Typically, this may be:

  • HDMI ARC
  • Digital Optical
  • Bluetooth
  • Wifi
  • Audio / AUX

Of course, you won’t be able to change advanced settings for the soundbar through the TV this way. You’ll still need the Bose Music App or a replacement remote.

#4 Program Your TV or Universal Remote

Universal remotes are very helpful for people who link up and control many devices at once. It has the ability to program complete control for many important sources.

I recommend a Universal Remote for almost anybody, and they come pretty affordable too!

This is your best bet for controlling the soundbar without the original remote.

Follow these steps for programming quickly:

  1. Open the Bose Music app on your phone and go to ‘Settings.’
  2. Select the ‘Universal Remote’ tab and choose ‘Advanced.’
  3. Tap on ‘Pair New Remote.’
  4. Take out the batteries from the universal remote control and wait 30 seconds before putting them back in.
  5. The app should detect the remote and pair it with it.
  6. Tap ‘Continue’ to finish the process and start using the app to operate your Bose speaker or soundbar.

If you don’t have the app or can’t get it to work, don’t panic!

You can have your remote search for the Soundbar on its end. The exact steps vary based on the universal remote, but they follow the same general format:

  1. Hold the source button on the remote until it blinks.
  2. Get close to the soundbar (when it’s on). Point the remote at the soundbar from 1-2 feet away.
  3. Press the power button slowly but repeatedly until the soundbar shuts off.
  4. Press the source button again to confirm the code selection.
  5. Test it out by pressing the power button to see if the soundbar turns on.

Again, this is a common way. You’ll have to look up your specific remote control model for more specific steps.

#5 Use HDMI Connection And Power-Sync

Use HDMI Connection And Power-Sync

HDMI ARC connections provide the highest quality audio and features, but it also helps with our lost remote or broken remote problem.

An HDMI connection often automatically Power Syncs the TV with the Bose. It’ll turn on and off and change volume automatically without needing to program a thing!

If it doesn’t work for some reason, go into the Bose Music App and go to

  • Settings
  • Power
  • Power Sync
  • Then Sync With TV or Sync With Source

#6 Program A New Bose Remote

Bose makes their own universal remotes, and this is the way to go if you need a new one. It works well and almost instantly with the Bose Soundbar.

Follow these steps once you buy a replacement one:

  1. Open the Bose Music app and tap the Settings icon in the upper-right corner. If a different product is displayed, tap the My Bose icon in the upper-left corner and select the desired product.
  2. In the Universal Remote section:
  3. To connect the Soundbar Universal Remote to the soundbar, select Advanced. For more information on pairing the remote control to your system, see the instructions in the app.

Why Your Bose Remote May Not Be Working

If you haven’t lost your remote and it’s just not working, there are a few things to try before you throw it out.

Some of these may seem simple, but they’re worth a try!

  • Make sure the speaker is plugged into a working outlet. If you’re not sure, try plugging it into a different outlet that you know is working. Your remote may be working just fine, but the soundbar is unplugged!
  • Consider replacing the batteries in the remote.
  • Unplug the soundbar and wait at least one minute before plugging it back in and attempting to turn it on again.
